In the main this is a first rate collection. I have to say, I didn’t really like the short story “Fire Watch,” whose title became the title for the collection.
It was written earlier, though, and there are some discrepancies between it and Doomsday, but it clearly takes place after. I stared at if for fully half a minute without realizing what it was. I used a dictionary constantly during this novella, which didn’t interest me much until the last pages. Her “Doomsday Book” of was one of the best science fiction novels I’ve ever read. At first I thought that the only way time travel narratives work was in comedies, such as Back to the Future.
