In his last, unfinished work, Percevalthe mysterious Grail makes its first appearance in literature. However, the last 20 or so pages felt somewhat jarring. Packed with action, quick pace, filled with drama and medieval heroism, it also leaves room for different interpretations, such as the view it gives on the issue of courtly love, which can easily provoke a discussion that may never be resolved.

If you know nothing about King Arthur, I’d still recommend chretienn book because I found it to be a great story of adventure and romance; plus, I found it really funny. Eventually, the queen allows herself to be ruled by Reason, not Joy, so she is capable of suppressing her own desires.

There is no hint of any idealistic conflict within Lancelot, as there is in later versions of the story. While this felt like a typically medieval story with some flaws that the modern critic may find problematic, I found it remarkably enjoyable.

Although he includes a perfunctory love scene where a bloody-fingered Lancelot bends metal bars to hook up with an imprisoned Guinevere while Kay, gravely wounded by his usual combination of bravado and poor planning, sleeps unwittingly in ep same room, there isn’t much of a payoff to their relationship.
