I did not find the book useful for the purpose. Later, I read the whole book for the main purpose it was written for, namely as a textbook for a graduate course, and found it quite good.
The chapters on floating point arithmetic are especially well written. I have not extensively studied the material yet, but I do want to warn others that physical implementation of this book is of low quality.
The chosen type faces and weights are not easy on the eyes. The print does not appear sharply defined. It appears to have been printed on a laser printer. You can feel the print if you run your fingers across the page. That said, it is hard bound and the paper edges are sheared off evenly.
This is such a wonderful book on computer arithmetic that it belongs in the cache of every computer architecture designer out there. The text is documented very well and has excellent explanations on topics that are quite difficult. Consequently, any engineer or student can decipher and decode what is going on with current architectures that employ computation.
Milos Ercegovac and Tomas Lang give the world a treasure trove of information that is not found in other locations and assimilates them into an easy and coherent fashion for all to read. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in digital logic design and its implementation. Many designs in industry still utilize very simplified versions of digital logic architectures and by employing the knowledge found in this text, a user can gain a tremendous amount of cost benefit for their product.
More importantly, it helps researchers who are interested in digital arithmetic, cryptography, and other highly beneficial areas of research. One person found this helpful. I am a student currently using this book for a course. I have found this book to be, quite literally, the worst textbook I have encountered. Neither author is a native English speaker and this is quite apparent especially in the way questions at the end of the chapter are phrased.
I can read a question and have no idea what the authors are asking me to find this isn’t a matter of not knowing how. To begin most problems, I have to look at the solutions manual to figure out what it is the authors intended to ask me.
If you are a professor considering this book, please, please, please think of your students and find a textbook that is easier to understand! A few other notes: Questions refer to figures, tables and samples are sprinkled throughout the chaper without giving a page number. I have seen other books that give a page number – this ercehovac much more friendly.
The notation used in the book is not explained and explanations seem to miss critical steps or concepts. A good book should be concise, clear and also should pack good deal of information. This book fails on all 3 counts.
And I am talking about adders and multipliers. This book should have been titled “Introduction to digital arithmetic”. I had a tough time to read thr’ 5 pages without getting frustated. You have to think hard just to figure out what the authors want to tell. Finally I want to say, if you want ercegoac learn about digital arithmetic, better buy Koren. I bought both the books at the same time, and found Koren lot better. This is the most comprehensive, rigorous, yet readable treatment of computer arithmetic I have yet encountered.
The authors are two of the leading authorities in the field. It is a must-own for anyone serious about the subject. This book has too many maths and not very intuitive. It has some fancy alternative algorithms never used in any designs. For engineers working on implementation, there are many other books far better than this one. Aritmetic early review over-rates this book and is very misleading. Because of these reviews, I purchased this book and found it very disappointing.
